Island Hideaway at Dhonakulhi Maldives Spa Resort & Marina
The Island Hideaway, Spa Resort & Marina is a luxury boutique resort situated on the privately owned uninhabited island of Dhonakulhi, North Maldives, Indian Ocean. The resort marina is the first of its kind in the Maldives. The large island has remained almost untouched by man-made development and presents a rare haven of peace, tranquility and serenity.
The name of the resort, Island Hideaway, is very befitting since it is far removed from the city, crowds, traffic and noise. It has an understated simplicity to it that brings back repeat visitors who have discovered the place and want to keep the secret for themselves.
Open since August 2005, The Island Hideaway at Dhonakulhi sits on its own 1.4 kilometre long, white beach, complete with lush green vegetation, and an adjacent house reef. The size of the island and scarcity of villas makes for a great hideaway amongst the screwpine trees that cover the island; under 5% of the island has been developed. A rustic celebration of nature...
The crystal clear turquoise waters of the shallow waist-deep lagoon surrounding the island stretch as far as the eye can see. The Island's uniquely rich and dense tropical vegetation instill a feeling of harmony and being at one with nature.
Having a beach length of some 3,200 meters around the Island, Island Hideaway is a haven of peace, tranquility and serenity. The Island is also unique in its reef formation. The reef system it sits on has a natural channel splitting it in two distinct parts, and thereby forming a natural harbour. 95% of the island is in its original state, untouched by the hand of man.
Whatever takes your fancy and whenever the time of day or night, the resort's resident Chefs remain entirely at your disposal. They can conjure up a myriad of succulent gourmet dishes to tempt your sensations and satisfy any taste at any time. The Chefs can suggest a menu specially designed for you using the freshest of local ingredients or can personalize a menu to excite your palate.. All of the resort's restaurants are located on the beachfront and have been designed to ensure that guests have maximum sights and sounds of the Indian Ocean. There are over water dining areas with glass floors, situated close to the reef edge, ensuring that fish are always your neighbours whilst you indulge in private dining. Alternatively, guests can choose to dine in the privacy of their Villas, 24 hours a day, or on a secluded part of the beach. For the romantics, just imagine strolling out to a nearby sandbank to enjoy an incredibly romantic candle-lit Robinson Crusoe experience or dining out under the stars - it is all possible at Island Hideaway. This is your island get-away and you choose how to enjoy your time here.
The Matheefaru Restaurant
The Matheefaru Restaurant is the place to dine for succulent international cuisine, Teppan Yaki grills, and incredible sunrise views if you can get up that early. But hey, you can always have a nap in the afternoon! The dishes served in Island Hideaway are far and wide selections from around the globe. Maldivian cuisine draws heavily on fish and is similar in some ways to Indian. Yet the dishes that are served on Island Hideaway are much more varied and sophisticated than just fish alone. The cool coral sandy-floored Matheefaru restaurant offers international and Maldivian cuisine - An extensive buffer for breakfast and Ala Carte for lunch and dinner.
Gaafushi Restaurant features fine dining and Asian specialties. Popular in the evenings for dinner because of it's location for spectacular sunset views. Gaafushi is built over water making it the best place to be sipping champagne as the electric sky dips into the ocean at dusk. Peer down through the balconied viewing hole in the entrance and watch the spotlighted waters with their colourful fish shimmer in the night.
Those wanting to while away the evening with exotic drinks and snacks in hand will find the Meeru Bar the perfect place for socializing. The Meeru Bar, situated on the beach, has a unique design in that the roof structure is like the inside of a boat's hull and the deck area extends over water giving fantastic sunset views. Comfortable sofas and day beds are scattered around for relaxation in comfort. The weekly Managers cocktail party held here is probably the closest you will get to a crowd on this island.
~ Organic Vegetable and Hydroponics garden on island ~ 24-hour in-Villa room service delivered by personal butler ~ Hosts the largest Malt Whisky collection in the Indian Ocean at the Meeru Bar ~ Desert Island Retreats - guests can take a trip to a nearby uninhabited island or have dinner on a sandbank lagoon and spend the day swimming, lazing and feasting on the delights of the picnic barbecue.
Recreation & Activities
Island Hideaway is the most relaxing place imaginable but it doesn't have to be motionless if you seek a little adventure. The waters are especially good for Big Game Fishing due to the excellent conditions in the surrounding area for this type of activity. This Atoll is famous in and out of the Maldives for its rich stock of fish and for producing huge catches.
If the setting above sea level has all the ingredients for holiday heaven, the spectacle awaiting you below the water's surface is even more spectacular. The Maldives is famed for its rare underwater beauty. The profusion of psychedelic colours and the abundance and variety of life underwater have fascinated divers and snorkellers since Maldives was first discovered as a diving destination. Island Hideaway is situated in an Atoll that is at the moment untapped and unexplored by the diving world. This gives an excellent opportunity for new divers and old alike to genuinely be able to dive where no person has ever dived before.
The Diving centre is operated by the Meridis Dive, which also offers a safe and enjoyable diving experience for children over 10 years of age, and has special "kids diving equipment" for this. Children can carry out the PADI Open Water Junior course.
For those that want to enjoy the view without getting wet, the resort has put an underwater camera in the nearby lagoon giving live views of life by the coral reef. From whale sharks to manta rays, moray eels to white tip sharks, a whole new world of magnificent marine creatures awaits you.
Meridis Dive Boutique - this is a dive specialist boutique where guests can purchase snorkelling and diving equipment.
The resort offers a superb 750 cubic meter infinity swimming pool facing the Indian Ocean, 32 meters in length and 22 meters in width with attached Jacuzzi and poolside service.
Island Hideaway has also made sure that all other forms of water sports are catered for - from speedboat trips to catamaran sailing to water skiing, snorkelling, windsurfing, canoeing, and wakeboarding. In addition, those wanting to experience a bit of local colour can sail out on a traditional Maldivian dhoni (boat) or their own yacht to one of the nearby-inhabited islands.
Fishing is one of the mainstays of subsistence for the Maldivian people, who have mastered it to an art. The guests are able to participate in sunset or night fishing on a traditional Maldivian dhoni fishing boat, big game fishing and also go on fishing expeditions with fishermen from the local islands and experience for themselves first-hand as to what proper eco-friendly fishing entails. The resort's expert chefs will thereafter prepare the catches made by the guests in whatever manner they desire, including beach barbecues.
The resort arranges excursions for guests to significant sites of Maldivian heritage and culture on nearby islands. One of the most important sites is the Utheemu Palace situated on Utheemu Island, home of the Maldivian national hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu (also: 'Bodu Thakurufaanu') and his two brothers who saved the Maldives from the Portuguese in 1573 AD.
The more land-based sports enthusiast can enjoy a game of tennis, volleyball on the sand, jog along the beach, bicycle along the hidden trails, or work-out at Hideaway's Fitness Suite. For the early birds, a refreshing session of silat is "just what the doctor ordered".
