Diving and snorkeling
Thilas, giris, reefs, drop-offs, corners, channels, wrecks – and visibility of up to 50 metres – make this a wonderful and totally safe place to learn to dive, and an equally rewarding centre for further exploration by the already qualified. Shark dives, the 1981 wreck of the Maldive Victory, the Rasfari protected marine area and some excellent turtle and ray viewing are highlights.
At the Reethi Rah Dive Centre, a team of experts offer a wide range of PADI-certified dive programmes for adults and children as young as 8 years old, including a complimentary daily orientation dive. A PADI Open Water Dive qualification can be achieved during a one-week stay. “Bubblemaker†lessons for younger kids and Discover Scuba programs for pre-teens and older are also available.
Underwater scooters, digital cameras and camcorders are available for personal use. The Reethi Rah Dive Centre operates two luxury Dive Dhonis, comlete with sun decks, hot showers, robes and refreshments. State-of-the-art equipment includes SCUBAPRO, as well as Bauer and Komptec compressors, all serviced on a regular basis with absolute safety in mind.
The wreck is a former tug-boat, sunk by the dive school in 1988 at the hose reef of Hembadu south-east from Reethi Rah. It is close to the reef so the navigation to and from it wreck is rather easy. It is 16 meters long with the top at 15 meters and the bottom at 22 meters. The boat is a focal point for marine life and is a fish-watchers delight. On the wrack's portside from 18 meter to surface are big coral rocks. A perfect place for a night dive.
For the sheer abundance of marine life, Helengili thila is hard to beat. The reef top is between 12 and 15 meters and currents through this channel can be treacherous. The thila is about 150 meters in length. The north west side of the thila has the most interesting reef formation, with steep cliffs and caves and outcrops of reef. It is only about 50 meters to Helengili house reef but in between is a deep channel at around 40 meters. The cliffs and caves are below 25 meters. Around from the caves on the south side at a depth of 18 meters is a big coral covered anchor. It is a good idea to bring a lamp.
Marine Life: The cliffs and caves are bristling with seafans both large and small. In the area where the four outcrops are standing is the soft coral growth immense. Hard corals are plentiful over the whole thila, especially around the anchor at south-west end of it. In the surrounding waters of the thila, divers can observe big a school of white-tip reef sharks, interspersed with great barracuda, tuna, trevally and schools of black snapper. Eagle rays and gray reef sharks are common visitors. Schools of fusilier can be so dens they block out the light. There are hundreds of blue-lined snappers sheltering from the current where the four outcrops are and lots of squirrel fish in under the overhangs. The reef top hosts an immense amount of different reef fish, snapper, sweetlip, moray, grouper and others. Turtles are common and during north-east monsoon even manta rays can occur.
There is plenty of variation of topography with sandy inlets and ridges cutting across a wide outside reef. The visibility is usually very good and an offshore reef, circular in shape with the top at a depth of 28 meters, can be seen from the main reef. This reef is more like a thila and on the inside the depth is 30 meters while on the out side it drops off well over 40 meters. On the main reef is an interesting terrain of coral ridges and patches of sand. Further south into Rasfari kandu (channel) is a drop off with in some deep and narrow caves.
The wreck is covered with small invertebrate animals, lumps of hard corals, soft corals, sponges and more. Both at the bow and stern are colonies of bushy black corals. Especially during a night dive the stern is beautiful with all it's Tubastrea coral. The house reef is full of big coral rocks making it a perfect place to finish the dive. The fish life around and on the wreck is rich. During the night is the commando bridge full of sweeper hunted by smaller blue-fin jack, snapper and grouper. The deck hosts different kind of parrot, scorpion, angel and wrasse. The high light during a night dive is to see the sleeping napoleon under or in the wreck, the big moray (once staring in the movie “The Deepâ€) and two big leopard groupers. The house reef offers a myriad of reef inhabitants like shrimps, anemones, sting rays, white-tip reef sharks and sometimes nurse sharks.
This is one of the resort's best shark sites. The top of the thila provides an excellent viewing locations for deep water pelagics. Close encounter with white-tip and gray reef sharks is normal together with great barracuda and eagle rays. Silver-tip shark is sometimes seen and even oceanic white-tip has been reported here. Along the reef in shallower water are some coral rocks hosting big reef fish like groupers and sweetlip. From there is easy to see sting rays and white-tip reef sharks resting on the sandy bottom. Keep an eye out for sometimes curious yellow-margin and titan trigger fish. Thanks to the often swift current the corals are beautiful here. Further into the channel are some very interesting caves. They are in shallow water and easy to explore but do not swim in. They are narrow but deep often nurse sharks and sting rays.
With the warm waters inviting you to play, many guests visit the Maldives simply to explore the amazing tropical wonders of the Indian Ocean. Embark on a dolphin-watching expedition, glide over crystalline waters on a catamaran, or soar into the sky on a parasailing adventure.
