Take a Trip into Nature
Take a trip to the Nature Protection Trust of Seychelles headquarters on Silhouette Island.
It's run by very friendly people who and will be happy to show you around! Meet the lovely giant tortoises! Ask them to take you up Mont Pot-a-Eau to see Jardin Marron, an area which the Trust is restoring to its natural state - it's an amazing walk, and they'll show you all the flora and fauna on the way! You can see a chameleon, some geckos, and some beautiful white-tailed tropic birds! They also make gorgeous batiks, which are sold at the shops on Silhouette and at Beau Vallon on Mahé.
If you are staying at The Cerf Island Resort, you have to dedicate a day to rediscover the joy of trekking for it is a unique occasion to explore the local fauna and flora.
Surprising footpaths will lead you through lush vegetation with unexpected openings onto breathtaking views of the island's beaches.
There are plenty of trails on the Seychelles islands, but to find them is a challenge. Normally the trails go to some breathtaking view point or end up at some nature phenomenon, water fall, shrine or plantation. The walks are hot, so bring plenty of water.
A network of easy trails – none requiring more than two hours of walking time – laces the Vallée de Mai National Park, on Praslin. Home to the famed coco-de-mer palm, whose oversize, sensuously shaped nut has been wowing nature-lovers for centuries, this remains one of the world's most pristine tropical forests.
More than 100 different species of coral make the offshore reefs a very pleasant place for snorkelers and serious underwater photographers alike. Bring your fish chart, and get ready to be dazzled. Watch for whale sharks in August and November.
Situated in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 miles east of Kenya and Tanzania, the islands in the inner group of Seychelles are solid granite, the peaks of a submerged continent. Huge gray boulders emerge like pachyderms along the shores of La Digue and Mahé, in startling contrast to the lapis sea.
The sight of those stones creates a sort of cognitive dissonance. No matter where you dive along those two islands' coastlines, it looks like someplace else – the edge of some vaguely remembered mainland.
Among those rocks, beyond the cinnamon and vanilla that perfume Seychelles' open-air markets, lies some of the world's finest diving. Octopus and lobster, clownfish and wrasse – all make their homes amid colourful sponges and gigantic rubbery leather corals that rise from the reefs like frozen globs in a sea-blue lava lamp.
"The central Seychelles are the world's only mid-oceanic granite archipelago," notes Glynis Sanders, who, along with David Rowat, runs Mahé's Seychelles Underwater Centre. "Because of this, perhaps, the diversity we get here is amazing. Marine biologists come back with a list of species as long as your arm – and that's after one snorkeling trip!"
The dive sites are considered very private - Seychelles sees relatively few visitors a year. Due to this the marine life is unusually tame.
